There Are Problems With Our Current Education System
- Core subjects have been modified. Reading, Writing, and Math scores have declined. Why? Because what is expected of students has also declined. With our fast-growing dependence on technology, these subjects have suffered.
- Schools have been the target of mass shootings. Parents should not be afraid to send their children to school, yet that is the reality. As a teacher, part of our professional development is learning how to be safe during a possible shooting. Never in my life did I think I would have to worry about such things, but it is the reality.
- Bullying has increased. There is inconsistency in how bullying is handled all around. There are anti-bullying focuses, contracts, lessons, etc. but without the results that were hoped for.
- Indoctrinations without consent of parents. I’ve seen this firsthand. It’s not ok. Children’s first teachers are their parents, and there is no way students should be taught anything without their parent’s consent when it comes to sensitive subjects. Unfortunately, I’ve seen the “desensitizing” of sensitive subjects among children, and some of it comes from their schools. From lessons in class to literature, some subjects are inappropriate without parental consent, yet it’s happening without parents’ knowledge. NOT OK!
- Constant distractions. As the lack of parental involvement in schools has grown, so have the behaviors within the schools. I have tried teaching a classroom of students trying to learn, but have had to evacuate them or move them to safety as another student acts out. This is not a good utilization of students’ time and focus. The learning time is greatly reduced. Not only does this affect students trying to learn, but also the teacher who is not only trying to teach but is now also managing the behaviors of other students, which sometimes can be safety issues.
This is just the surface
The illiteracy of adults (even after graduating with a high school diploma) is at an all-time high. Because of this, many schools are pushing the “science of reading,” drilling students to learn to read without even getting a chance to ENJOY reading. The stresses of curricula like this stress out teachers and students alike, thereby leading to unwanted behaviors and distractions. I spent the last year of my public school teaching and dealing with this on a DAILY BASIS. Let’s just remind ourselves we have access to vast knowledge at our fingertips with the Internet, yet we are in an educational decline. It’s so unfortunate for our students.
